While recently working on a project in Wisconsin, our client was kind enough to let us sit in on their Fleet Training with their CMV drivers. Safety was the number one focus of this training, and the company has been implementing numerous policies over the last few years to make sure their drivers are the safest team out there. Driver performance monitors were installed several years ago and electronic hours of service technology has now been installed to ensure the fleet is compliant with upcoming regulations.
The most surprising thing we learned during these meetings were how many CMV drivers still refuse to use hands-free cellular phones while operating a vehicle. On January 3, 2012, a ban on handheld cellular telephones went into effect. Drivers may not dial, hold or reach for their cellular phone while driving. It must be a push to talk device (meaning only one button needs to be pushed in order to start using the phone).
Are your drivers compliant with FMCSA’s regulations?
